How to Make Ice Cream Sandwiches

Whether it is hot or cold outside, an ice cream sandwich may just be the perfect way to cool off or relax. However, you don’t have to settle for store-bought ice cream sandwiches that come in as few flavors as possible. By making your own ice cream sandwiches, you may be better able to satisfy your whole household’s sweet tooth cravings without sacrificing flavor or preferences.

Making ice cream sandwiches is easy. All that you need to do is have the ice cream flavors that you want on hand, as well as the cookies that you want to use as the ‘buns.’ You can bake your own cookies from scratch or bake cookies from frozen cookie dough. It is better to use cookies that have just been recently baked because they are generally much more pliable. The store-bought cookies can be quite hard unless you use the very soft kind, and they may break when trying to form the ice cream sandwich.

Allow the ice cream to melt just a little bit so that it is easier to spread on the cookie. Use a butter knife to help spread the ice cream onto the cookie. Put as much ice cream as you want. In general, store-bought ice cream sandwiches have at least 1/2″ of ice cream. If you want more ice cream, use one large scoop or two large scoops. Then, use the butter knife to spread the ice cream out towards the edges of the cookie. Place the other cookie on top and press firmly. Eat immediately, although the melted ice cream may seep into the cookies, too.

If you want to add more interest or flavor to the cookie, you can add any of your favorite candies or toppings. Most of the time you will have to add these extras between the layers of ice cream. Once you have spread the first scoop of ice cream onto the cookie, place the toppings and extras on top and then spread the second scoop of ice cream. This way, the toppings will not fall out when you are eating the sandwich.

Don’t forget, you can also take crushed toppings and spread them all over the ice cream sides of the ‘sandwich.’ Just put the crushed toppings onto a plate and roll the ice cream sandwich on its side, just like a wheel, all over the crushed toppings. This is a great alternative to folding the toppings into the ice cream.
